What is an intervention?

An intervention is an activity or treatment that we know can be helpful in fighting the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. When talking about stress, anxiety and depression we use the term ’Common Mental Health problems’

Level 2 Guidance

These interventions help people to identify how their thinking and behaviour can change during a period of illness and how to change them to help lift your mood.

Self Help interventions such as Bibliotherapy are known to help. Bibliotherapy is a fancy name for using books to help manage our symptoms. Some of these books can be ‘prescribed’ by healthcare professional and picked up from your local library using the prescription. The libraries also have the same set of books on the public lending shelves. A list of these books can be found in step two of the directory.

Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CCBT) is psychological therapy provided by computer. These programme have been recognised as being an effective method of identifying the thoughts and behaviour that can keep low mood and anxiety going. There are a few CCBT programmes available on the World Wide Web with a good evidence base for helping people.

Sometimes it will be necessary for your doctor to refer you for some’ talking therapy’ if self help does not work.
